Chapter the First: Mermaid Strippers

Always when you enter a strip club, there is this drunk guy at the bar, talking to you. I say talking, but really only shouting in your dirección. Maybe he is shouting “Tits!” or maybe he shouts “Arse!”, but actually he is only lonely, and wants to talk about what a screw-up he and his life is.

Alex stared out of the window. He had given up both his seat – to a waiting old lady – and his attempt to read his neighbour’s newspaper over his shoulder. The train stopped and Alex started. Good grief! This was his station.

“I have a very important meeting today,” he said to no one in particular as they waited for the train doors to open.

Off the train he went and across the platform. Then down, down, down into the darkness of the underground. Gaps minded, doors closed, eyes avoided and so he arrived. The receptionist received him.

The angry burr of a helicopter landing alerts me that I will soon have a visitor. Only the top brass at the company travel in this manner, so I do my best in the time I have to tidy the lab.

I get things just about respectable when the CEO bursts through the door, the heavy black mascara around her eyes failing utterly to hide her fury. Only the giant shoulder pads on her powersuit and the sheer volume of hair seemed to be weighing her anger down enough to contain it.

It was my first night at the new house, and I couldn’t sleep. I thought moving from the city to the countryside would make things easier, but I was wrong. Gone was the strangely soothing hum of tyres on tarmac, and the low grumble of underground trains, replaced by a thick silence, pierced irregularly by the hooting and growling of unseen birds and beasts.
